Sandstone Energy: Powering Communities and Building Bookshelves

For the past seven years, Sandstone Energy has proudly upheld its mission to donate 100% of profits to the Calgary Public Library Foundation (CPLF). The idea that Calgarians could pay their utility bills while supporting the growth of the CPLF has remained a powerful and motivating force behind everything we do.

In 2020, we took our commitment one step further by directing our monthly contributions to support the My First Bookshelf program. In partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, this initiative provides new, age-appropriate books to children from birth until their fifth birthday—delivered directly to their homes.

The My First Bookshelf program has become one of the Calgary Public Library’s most beloved offerings. Over the past year, this early literacy initiative has reached incredible milestones, including a capacity expansion that now serves over 4,000 young Calgarians every month. Additionally, themed storytimes have continued to engage and inspire families.

One of the program’s most notable achievements came in July when the Library proudly delivered its 100,000th book—less than four years after the program began. By the end of August 2024, a remarkable total of 105,407 books had been mailed to children across our community. The recipients aren’t just reading these books—they’re being shared with siblings, friends, and families, building a culture of reading and lifelong learning. This milestone is a direct result of your support. Thank you for helping us fill so many children’s first bookshelves!

However, the Library’s impact doesn’t stop with early literacy programs. In 2023, the Calgary Public Library saw record-breaking growth, welcoming over 150,000 new members. Today, 56% of the community actively engages with the Library. Your contributions through Sandstone Energy have been crucial in advancing key initiatives, particularly those aimed at early learning. These initiatives provide vital, accessible resources that help children and their families succeed in their educational journeys.
